I am originally from a small town north of Dallas, Texas called Archer City. We had a dairy queen and a blinking red light. After leaving my home town to go to college, i eventually made my way to Dallas. i met my partner there; after being together for about 6+ years we moved to his home town, new orleans. i guess i told him one to many times that they had fixed the levees that he could go home. So he brought me with him.
While living in Dallas i was part of a couple of different organizations that i enjoyed. i was a member of the Dallas Bears and the United Court of the Lone Star Empire. Both of these groups allowed me to give back to my community in ways that i never knew i could, coming from the small town i grew up in. The thing that I missed the most from my time in dallas was being part of those community groups. Both of the organizations in which i was active raised money for local charitable causes, and also helped promote LGBT issues. Raising money for the charities was certainly fulfilling, but knowing that i may have had a role in touching just one person’s life gave me the most satisfaction. We were able to provide funds to AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD), AIDS Interfaith Network (AIN) and Youth First Texas. Both ASD and AIN gave assistance to individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS. Youth First Texas was a safe place to LGBT youth to meet and get to know others that were just like themselves. i have continued the work that i started back in Dallas by giving back to my new community. Here in New Orleans, we have great need for not only education about LGBT issues but also HIV awareness and prevention.
Currently I am the MIstress of Novices for the Big Easy Sisters here in New Orleans, LA. We may just be starting out as a new Mission house but we have already have our foot in the door with people taking note of who we are. We host a monthly beer bust and also the every other month we have our Bingo. So if you ever in the "Big Easy" look us up.
